Greetings:

The good news is, that many of the transportation Companies have increased CDL Driver’s pay.  Along with the increase in pay, we are seeing more frequent Home time, holiday and vacation pay and various benefits.

The good news/bad news simply put, our industry needs more CDL Driver’s.  Companies are working on ways to finding qualified drivers.

On the “recruiting side” we see numerous incentives to attract Drivers:
Large “Sign-On” bonuses $10,000 for solo driver (Pay out is 24 months).
Teams  “Sign-On” bonuses $50,000.  ($50,000 team OTR bonus with 4 weeks paid vacation is in addition to our industry-leading team pay of up to 82 CPM.)
  Sales of
trucks in the heaviest Class 8 weight segment surged 59 percent to 296,440 vehicles in 2017, according to ACT Research.  Forecast for 2018 on Class 8 trucks will be around 322,000.
Both small and large transportation companies are upgrading the new trucks as a perk for Regional and OTR Drivers.

Freight rates have been increasing, which is having a positive relationship with increased driver pay.  Some of the mileage companies have gone to % of load to their drivers.  (Most all that have switched to % pay, will still withhold taxes, issue W-2 as usual).  The neat thing about this, the freight rates with the percentage pay method, generates more revenue than the mileage rate.  Not that mileage pay is going to go away, it will always be competitive.

Currently, I have several quality companies that I have recruited for over the past 15 years.  My goal in recruiting is to find a fit for both Driver and Company.  It has taken along time, for everyone to fully realize, that Professional Drivers are no longer “A Dime A Dozen”.  Daily I receive emails from companies talking about the changes that have been made internally to support and respect their drivers.  Retention of drivers has become a very high priority in most of the transportation companies.

To say the least, helping and respecting each other in our industry, I believe will improve as the pay and demand for drivers continues to grow.
