Trucking Industry Pushes Back: No More Free Ride for EVs!

If you’re a trucker hauling America’s goods, you already know one thing for sure: fuel taxes aren’t optional. Every mile you drive, every gallon of diesel you pump, you’re paying into the Highway Trust Fund—the pot of money that helps keep our roads and bridges in shape. But guess who isn’t paying their fair share? Electric vehicles (EVs).

That’s right. While truckers and diesel drivers fork over heavy fuel taxes, EVs cruise along the same roads for free. But that might be changing soon. Senator Deb Fischer and Congressman Dusty Johnson have introduced the Fair Share Act, and the trucking industry is fully on board.

What’s the Issue?

EVs don’t use diesel or gas, so they don’t pay fuel taxes. But they still contribute to road wear and tear—especially as heavier electric trucks start hitting the highways. Right now, the Highway Trust Fund relies on fuel taxes, meaning truckers are carrying the financial load while EV owners get a free pass. The Fair Share Act aims to change that by making sure EVs contribute to road funding, just like the rest of us.

Why Truckers Care

This isn’t just about fairness—it’s about keeping the roads safe and maintained. If the Highway Trust Fund runs low, guess who’s footing the bill? More tolls, more fees, and even higher fuel taxes for diesel truckers. The Fair Share Act would put an end to this imbalance and ensure everyone who uses the road helps pay for its upkeep.

What Happens Next?

The bill is gaining traction, and trucking organizations like the American Trucking Associations (ATA) are fully behind it. But like anything in politics, it needs support to push through. If you’re a trucker, this is one of those moments where your voice actually matters. Keep an eye on this bill, and if you’re tired of carrying the weight for EVs, let your representatives know.

At the end of the day, all we’re asking for is fair play. If you roll on America’s highways, you should help pay for their upkeep—no exceptions. 🚛💨
